What frontier industries teach us about trust.

With recent headlines, it’s safe to say that quantum computing is no longer a thought experiment. The science is advancing, capital is flowing in, and people are getting excited by it. By most measures this should be a triumphant moment. But lurking under all that buzz is a quiet vulnerability that rarely makes it into the technical roadmaps: almost all of its communication energy goes into explaining how the technology works, while almost none into what it means for the people who will live alongside it.
That distinction matters more than it sounds. In the history of frontier technology, the ideas that win are the ones people understand, and brilliant ideas often get dragged down by stories their creators never shaped.
The industries that went first
To see where quantum is headed, we look to three technologies that walked this road just ahead of it: AI, crypto and nuclear energy. All three were genuine marvels at their inception. All three promised to reorganize something fundamental in human life. And all three, to varying degrees, have lost control of their own narrative.
The evidence is in the headlines. Reuters reporting crypto markets losing roughly $205 billion in a single day. Fortune relaying an MIT finding that AI is failing at the overwhelming majority of companies trying it. Nature airing experts’ fears that AI could end humanity. The BBC and NPR questioning whether the public debate about nuclear has been aimed at the wrong thing. These are not fringe outlets. When a field doesn’t actively tell its own story, the vacuum gets filled, usually by fear, occasionally by hype, almost never by nuance.
Narrative negligence has a price
For technically-minded organizations, it’s tempting to treat communication as a nice to have, something to sort out once the product is ready. Neglecting the narrative is itself a decision, and it has measurable consequences. Here at ATP, we call that narrative negligence and we see it play out in three ways:
First, investors hold back. Capital is a bet on a story about the future, and when that story is murky or frightening, the money waits. Second, talent goes elsewhere. The brightest engineers and scientists want to work on things they can explain with pride at a dinner table, not things they have to defend. Third, regulators overcorrect. Policy made in an atmosphere of public anxiety tends to be blunt and reactive and it constrains the good actors along with the bad.
Crypto is the cautionary tale. The 2008 Bitcoin whitepaper described an elegant solution to a real problem: trust in financial systems without intermediaries. But the public timeline that followed was written by crises instead: in 2014, The Mt. Gox bankruptcy lost nearly $500 million in bitcoin; 2022 saw $205 billion wiped out in a single day; and in the 4 years since, a steady drumbeat of scams filled the gaps. The takeaway: the underlying idea never got a fair hearing in the court of public opinion because the creators never even tried to defend it.
The trust gap is already measurable
If you want a single number that captures the danger, AI provides it. Pew Research Center found that only 24% of US adults believe AI is more likely to benefit them personally. Among AI experts, that figure is 76%.
A 52 point gap between the people building a technology and the people who will live with it is an existential business risk. The experts and the public are effectively living in two different futures. That gap exists because no one has taken the time to actually create true meaning for AI in the minds of the public. And here’s the thing: you can’t trust that good intentions around your innovation will close the gap. You don’t get credit for what you meant; you get judged on what people perceive.
Quantum’s window is open, for now
But, there’s some good news still for quantum because it isn’t yet where crypto or AI ended up. Public conversation about quantum is growing steadily, without the spikes and crashes that scandals brought to other fields. Curiosity is genuine and still largely positive because the fear and confusion that calcified around other technologies haven’t set in.
Windows close, though. This is quantum’s moment to act, while public curiosity is still ahead of confusion. The industry has a rare chance to define its own terms while people are leaning in to listen.
From explainer mode to meaning mode
Moving from explainer mode to meaning mode doesn’t mean abandoning rigour or oversimplifying the science. But there are three principles that, when applied, can have significant impact on how well your science is perceived:
The levers that bring it to life
Three levers turn these principles into practice. The first is imaginative visuals. Quantum is invisible and counterintuitive by nature, so vivid, original imagery does real work. It gives people something to hold onto.
The second is diverse, real voices. Spokespeople who reflect the actual breadth of the people building and using quantum are more credible and more relatable than faceless institutions, and they tap into genuine community and conversation.
The third is medium. The medium always shapes the message. A documentary builds trust in a different way to a viral clip. A behind the scenes look at a lab does something a press release never can. Choosing the right medium is what separates explaining from storytelling, and storytelling from building a brand people believe in.
Tell your story before someone else does
Quantum doesn’t need to win a technical argument about qubits and coherence times. The job is to earn a place in people’s sense of the future, to be understood, trusted and wanted. The industries that came before learned this lesson by unintentionally surrendering their stories and then spending years trying to win them back.
Quantum still has the better option in front of it: to tell its own story, deliberately and early, while the world is still curious. The technology is already extraordinary. The opportunity now is to make the story extraordinary too, and to move decisively from explainer mode to meaning mode.
